Coral Grief- Air Between Us

Coral Grief approaches dream pop with an original sense of momentum and imagination. The band is equally driven through melody and rhythm, with textured songs that bounce between krautrock and 90s indie. A strong local base and growing national audience has formed around their surreal, playful and catchy sound.

Their first two EPs, both released on Seattle tape label Den Tapes, exhibit the band’s versatility and experimentation. Full of double meanings, these songs revolve around feelings of personal and collective stagnation, while also remaining curious amidst times of disorder. Comprised of Lena Farr-Morrissey (bass, vocals), Sam Fason (guitar) and Cam Hancock (drums), the trio’s music highlights each other’s distinct and varied playing styles, from intricate basslines & syncopated beats to lush guitars and ethereal vocals.

In the past year and a half, Coral Grief has toured extensively across the US, including festival dates at Treefort Music Fest, Capitol Hill Block Party and South by Southwest. They have also opened for acclaimed artists like Indigo de Souza, Chastity Belt, and Luna. Their dynamic live performances seamlessly shift between driving, motorik beats and enveloping ambient atmospherics.

Coral Grief’s first full length, Air Between Us, is steeped in the band’s iconic melodic textures and powerful rhythms, but it takes on a newfound strength through the songwriting. Both an ode and a eulogy to the Seattle area, Farr-Morrissey grapples with how her hometown has mutated, not into something better or worse necessarily, just different. The recordings capture the band’s exuberant & spirited live energy, which is balanced with thoughtful and layered production.

Air Between Us is an homage to beachcombing, a thank you to everyone who keeps our music community loyal & eccentric, a document of a record store’s nine lives, a yearning to question our complacency.

It’s a midnight drive where the sun never sets, it’s the sweetest things that your grandma says. It’s one of the iconic shops on Rainier Avenue when it finally closes. It’s the takeoff, it’s the waves, it’s a traveler and a friend.

Best enjoyed while you’re going someplace, but you don’t have to know where! →←

PRESS

“Their music is wondrously dreamy, floating in the ether with gentle textures and focused rhythms. They jump between mellowed ambiance and motorik psych-pop, pulling influences from bands like Yo La Tengo and Broadcast together to create their own introspective landscape. Led by the gorgeous vocals and slinky bass of Lena Farr-Morrissey, the trio shift in gradual formation from one blissed out moment to the next.” - Dan Goldin, Post-Trash

“On their debut EP, Seattle duo Coral Grief absolutely nail dream pop. It’s not just the familiarity of the reverberative spaces they conjure…these are smartly-crafted songs that belie their humble, familiar frameworks with surprising twists, strong melodies and a production job that doesn’t cheapen any of these components.” - The Tape Deck

“This Seattle duo’s debut EP is a solid set of atmospheric dream-pop with gentle guitars, shimmering synths and spare drum loops accompanying Lena Farr-Morrissey's ethereal vocals.” - Don Yates, KEXP
